The
Mid-Major College Basketball and FCS Game of the Week (formerly the I-AA Game of the
Week) is a radio college basketball and football broadcast
co-produced by Gino Communications in conjunction with
Broadcaster Marketing Services. The series broadcasts a
weekly regular season college football broadcast of
teams from the Division I Football Championship
Subdivision (formerly Division I-AA) and college
basketball games featuring top mid-major colleges, through the
facilities of one of North America’s most powerful AM
radio stations, WCKY, AM 1530, Cincinnati.
CONCEPT AND ORIGIN ON SATELLITE RADIO
In 2005, David Brody the co-founder and current
president of Broadcaster Marketing Services a
full-service sportscaster coaching and representation
agency based in Birmingham, Alabama, along with one of
his clients, Frank Santore, Jr. approached Sirius
Satellite Radio with the idea of airing a weekly regular
season college football broadcast of teams at the
Division I-AA level. While the series did not come to
fruition that year, it did in 2006. It was in that year
that the Sports Byline USA Radio Network which was one
of the original lessors of time on Sirius Satellite
Radio agreed to syndicate these broadcasts, which were
then called the I-AA Game of the Week.
BROADCASTS ON TERRESTRIAL RADIO
When 2006 came, both Brody and Santore saw that the
series was in trouble. First, Sirius’ contract with
Sports Byline had expired, and, secondly, Sirius was not
willing to pick up the project as a stand-alone
project. Brody and Santore were about ready to
terminate the project until Appalachian State’s shocking
win over Michigan. As a result, the two came up with the
idea of broadcasting a series of games (the FCS Game of
the Week) on a delayed broadcast basis utilizing a
powerful nighttime signal. Thus, a seven-game schedule
was put together in rather short order for the 2007
football season, aired on a same-day delayed-broadcast
basis over WCKY, 1530 AM in Cincinnati, Ohio, the signal
of which blankets all of the eastern United States and
Canada, and most of the midwest at night. This station
is one of the stations owned by Clear Channel Media, one
of the largest media companies in the United States,
and, in 2009, the series’ home will be on WCKY for the
third consecutive year.
